Big guns to douse Fire

By BRET HARRIS

The Australian

CANBERRA CAPITALS will be aiming to secure a top-two finish when they play Townsville Fire at the Fire Station in the penultimate round of the regular season tonight.

The Capitals are in second place on the ladder behind Adelaide Lightning.

If the Capitals win their last two games -- against Townsville and then Adelaide the following weekend -- they will finish equal first with the Lightning.

Lightning have already secured the regular-season championship after beating Canberra twice earlier in the season. If Canberra lose their last two games, they could finish third and surrender their double chance in the play-offs.

Even though Townsville are on the bottom of the table, the Fire are always dangerous at home.

"We're going after this one to consolidate second spot," Capitals coach Carrie Graf said.

"Townsville are a difficult team at home. They've got a mad, fanatical crowd which makes it difficult for the visiting team.

"They play an up tempo run-and-gun style of hoops at home. We have to control the tempo and maintain our poise."

The Capitals have been bolstered by the return of veteran power forward Lucille Hamilton, who has missed six games because of two broken fingers.

Hamilton will come off the bench behind her younger sister Jacinta, who has performed well in Lucille's absence.

"I didn't expect Lucille back this week but she practised well so that's a bonus," Graf said.

"Obviously, she's a big part of our group. Her little sister has done a good job but Lucille gives us another dimension. She's another veteran, a scorer and a defender. She's in our mix of our top group of players."
